Well, not yet, but Blues Women are sitting at the top of their Continental Cup group. This coming Sunday’s game away to Man City will be a real test of character and nerve.
The two teams last met at the Academy Stadium on 13th, in the League, when the end result was not the one Blues’ fans were hoping for. In my analysis I talked about them spending the first third of the game keeping Man City rattled but then watching it all fall apart as they retreated into their own area, put together poor passes and executed poor set pieces. Since then, we’ve seen a revived Blues as they won convincingly at Leicester in the Cup and then gave Liverpool a lesson in how to play football last Sunday in the League.
So to this Sunday. As I write, Man City are suffering in their Champions League game against Atletico Madrid. They went into this tie with a League defeat courtesy of Arsenal. It’s not all good, which could well be to Blues’ advantage. If they can play like they did on Sunday, especially in the last third of the pitch, they have a very good chance of coming away with all three points. That would leave Man City on 3, whilst Blues would go up to 9. With Man Utd and Everton on top form in the League at the moment, the table would still be wide open to accompany Blues through to the knockout stages.
It’s going to be tough but I believe they can do it.
