Match Report by Blues Ladies‘ Adam Smith
Blues replicated their result from 2 weeks ago with a solitary goal win over Notts County and extended their run of consecutive clean sheets to 4 in the process.
Notts County had the majority of the ball in the opening stages but struggled to create any clear cut chances. Blues first opportunity of the game came from a corner when the ball fell to Ayisi who’s shot was deflected wide. Notts County threatened from a corner of their own with White connecting with a vicious volley at the back post only to find Baggaley pull off a great save.
Blues were often their own worst enemies with some suicidal balls played in defence, Clarke nearly benefited for Notts County when her effort from range forced Baggaley into another fine save. Baggaley took a nasty looking knock to the head when she hit the post whilst making the save, fortunately she was okay to continue. More wayward passing at the back could of given Notts County the lead if it wasn’t for a superb tackle from Mannion on James as she was about to pull the trigger. The best opportunity of the half for Blues came when Ayisi picked the ball up on the half way line and ran at Notts County’s goal but saw her effort deflected wide.
County’s first chance of the second half came in the form of a long range effort from Clarke which Baggaley was equal to. Blues’ goal came shortly after when Potter had an opportunity to shoot from inside the area, Telford was only able to parry the ball down and Allen was on hand to bundle home from a few yards out.
Blues could of extended their lead when skipper Westwood had a volley well saved from Telford around the hour mark. In the second half blues controlled the game well and looked comfortable with their lead despite Notts County bringing on Buet, Adams and Whelan as they tried to mix things up looking for an equaliser. The improved ball retention at the back cut out the number of opportunities Notts County created in the second half.
Blues now head into a good months break sitting in 3rd place just 1 point behind Chelsea in second and 4 points clear of 4th place Liverpool.
